Check the Weather (Then Check It Again)

The single most important step before any walk. The weather in the Lake District can change from sunshine to thick mist and rain in under an hour. A valley can be calm while the summit is dangerously windy.

Never trust the weather you see from your window. Always check a dedicated mountain forecast.

Essential Kit Checklist

This is your non-negotiable kit list for any moderate or challenging fell walk, even on a sunny day. This gear can keep you safe if the weather turns or you are delayed.

  • Waterproof Jacket
  • Waterproof Trousers
  • Worn-in Walking Boots
  • Extra Warm Layer (Fleece)
  • Hat & Gloves
  • Map & Compass
  • Fully Charged Phone
  • External Battery Pack
  • Food (More than you need)
  • Water (At least 1.5L)
  • Small First Aid Kit
  • Torch (Headtorch is best)

Navigation Basics

Your Phone is Not a Map

Using a GPS app on your phone is great, but it must not be your only navigation tool. Cold weather drains batteries, rain stops touchscreens from working, and signal is non-existent in most valleys.

Always carry a physical map and a compass. Even if you don't use them, they are your most reliable backup if your technology fails. Our route guides provide the correct OS Map number (e.g., OL4, OL5) for each walk.

In an Emergency

If you or someone in your group is injured and cannot move, or you are dangerously lost:

1. Call 999 or 112

2. Ask for POLICE

3. Then ask for MOUNTAIN RESCUE

Be ready to give your exact location. If you have a map, provide the Grid Reference. If you are using a smartphone, you can find your location using its built-in GPS (e.g., in the compass app or by using an app like OS Locate).
