Our Purpose & Approach

Lake District Hikes was created for a simple reason: finding safe, clear, and beginner-friendly hiking information shouldn't be the hardest part of your trip. We are aimed at first-time visitors and intermediate walkers who want to explore the fells without complex jargon.

Our focus is on plain-English guides, practical safety advice, and promoting car-free travel to help protect the landscape we all love. This website is a project for COM4014: Introduction to Web Authoring, built from scratch with only HTML and CSS.

Accessibility Statement

We are committed to making this website accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of technology or ability. This aligns with the principles of inclusive design and the requirements of Task 3 of our assignment.

What We're Doing

  • Semantic HTML: We use correct HTML tags (like <header>, <nav>, <main>, and <article>) to help screen readers understand the page structure.
  • Alt Text: All informational images include descriptive alternative text (e.g., alt="A hiker on a fell with a view over a lake."). Placeholder images are marked appropriately.
  • Colour Contrast: We have aimed for strong colour contrast between text and backgrounds to ensure readability.
  • Responsive Design: The site uses media queries to adapt to different screen sizes, from mobile phones to desktops.
  • No JavaScript: This site is built using only HTML and CSS, ensuring it works for users who may have JavaScript disabled.

Future Goals

As this project develops, we will conduct formal validation to ensure our HTML and CSS are error-free and test the site's navigation using only a keyboard.
